Menswear Trends: Fall 2014

As a birthplace of über creativity and streams of innovative construction, the menswear market is standing tall as a lane that is no longer just “one way.” Fall 2014 marks the end of a few trends and then resurrection of a few favorites.  Although it’s still blistering outside, the cool breeze and then artic sweep of fall will creep up before you know it.

Below is all of the menswear trends into a list of 7 that virtually anyone could participate in. Grab your pens, check your accounts, and start planning your fall wardrobe.

Baggage Check: Oversized Bags and Briefcases

L to R: Canali, Burberry Prorsum, and Tod’s

Murse (man purse), Manbag, and Mutch (men’s clutch) are all terms you may or may not have heard. This fall you’ll see even more bags designed to meet the functionality and style enhancement purposes of a man’s lifestyle. From an aesthetics and style perspective, bags, carry alls and weekenders, prevent bulges in the front and back pockets. Bulges deter away from clean lines and create undesirable body shapes and can become quite uncomfortable when sitting.

Head Held High (HHH): Big Collars and Turtlenecks

Left to Right: Balenciaga (+baggage claim), Belstaff, Tom Ford, Bally (+baggage claim)

There is no reason to have a cold neck this fall. Your head should be held high and it will be supported by big collars, plush turtlenecks, and skin-pleasing fabrics. The turtleneck is no longer your grandfather’s retirement wardrobe favorite. When paired under a motorcycle jacket (also trending), blazer, or peacoat, it adds an instant level of  assuredness.

Harley Reject: The Highly Constructed Motorcycle Jacket

Mens Fall 2014 Trends
L to R: Gucci, Saint Laurent Paris, Fendi (+ Orange Isn’t The New Black), and Diesel Black Gold

Own a Harley? No? Ok. Well, you can own a motorcycle jacket that turns just as many heads. With it in prints, bold colors, and classic silhouettes, the motorcycle jacket is perfect for weekends get-a-ways and the casual day off from work. Opt for a non-leather motorcyclist jacket and trainers for the quick runs out for soy milk and a few groceries.

Blizzard Couture: Maximum Layers

Mens Fall 2014 Trends
L to R: Dior, Louis Vuitton (+baggage claim), and J. Crew

Layers, layers, and layers, oh my! Designers have layered up their looks and presented everyone from Alaska to Barcelona with options to fight off any blizzard-hazardous weather. Whether in boots or brogues, while dressing in heavy layers you may look cool, but you’ll definitely feel warm. Explore layering through cardigans, chunky knit scarfs, and shoulder blankets (or mankets).

Geometry Class: Geometric Shapes and Prints

Mens Fall 2014 Trends
L to R: E. Tautz (+ No Gray Area), Valentino (+Orange Isn’t The New Black), Versace, and Paul & Joe (+Orange Isn’t The New Black)

It is the time to mix prints, mix patterns, and not to think twice about it. Geometric shapes and prints have inspired designers to draw outside of the lines and present men with just as many print options as women. You may have struggled with Geometry while in school, but with these prints you’ll pass every time.

No Gray Area: Black and White

Mens Fall 2014 Trends
L to R: Ralph Lauren, Sibling (+Blizzard Couture, Head Held High), Berluti, and Christopher Kane

To call this is a trend may be a stretch because black and white is classic and almost fail-proof. Try approaching black and white from a way that wouldn’t make you look like the Maître D at the Ritz, but rather a confident man who embraces color, but dares to explore black and white in a fresh way.

Orange Isn’t The New Black: Green

Men's Fall 2014 Trends
L to R: Lanvin, Moncler Gamme Bleu (+ Geometry Class), Public School (+Blizzard Couture), and Kenzo (+Head Held High)

From simple pieces of appliqué to the being the most dominant color, green and many of its 50 shades (no offense to gray), was either the star or the supporting role on fall runways. Providing a fresh foreshadow for spring, green is an eye-grabbing addition to any fall wardrobe. While orange is still very popular, green denotes positivity and prosperity, which are always two things anyone could use a little more of.
