NYFW Review & Photos: General Idea Fall/Winter 2013

FW13 GENERAL IDEA NEW YORK

General Idea Fall/Winter 2013 Creative Director, Bumsuk Choi, was inspired by “(The Path to Buddha ) A Tibetan Pilgrimage” by Steve McCurry. This photographic book of intimate portraits of Tibetans on their own personal journeys inspired the overarching nomadic theme of the collection.

The collections lives up to its inspiration with utilitarian and functional sleekness.  Just given the inspiration, you would imagine that the Tibetans were bundled up in different layers and different fabrics to keep warm from the cold weather. The mixing of different fabrics and layering was definitely prevalent in this collection, for example, the the tan packet, leather sleeve jacket (see below). This trend is becoming the common thread of most menswear collections for Fall/Winter 2013. What else struck me was the use of the color blue, its all throughout the collection in several different shades and hues. It’s good when a collection can have at least one common attribute that is consistent throughout.

One key note of the collection that stand out is the great use of geometrical shapes and the silhouettes of the pieces.
