Apaggio Restaurant

At the tail end of high season in beautiful Mykonos, Greece, LuxuriousPROTOTYPE staff had the opportunity to dine at Apaggio Restaurant located on Ornos Beach. We had a wonderful time and enjoyed the food and staff immensely; special thanks go to Chris and Velibor! Apaggio is located across the bay from the Ammos Hotel and offers lovely sunset views. If you are seated outside, you will see the fishing boats of Ornos docked so close you can reach out and touch them.

The location is excellent, easily accessible from a few of the most popular hotels in Ornos. Upon walking in you get a feeling of warmth that’s indicative of Greek culture, the beauty of being steps away from the amazing Mykonian Sea and 5-star seafood all at once. Apaggio is tastefully decorated in blues and creams which bring to mind a calming oasis where your sole job is to eat, drink and enjoy yourself. The restaurant itself is quite spacious with indoor and outdoor seating, and wonderful views.

We ordered a few drinks to judge the quality of the cocktails, and the sangria was a table favorite along with the stiff but not overly strong G&T’s. One member had a glass of rose wine, which was decent but not a stand out compared to other roses. Our servers, Chris and Velibor, started our dinner journey by bringing out breads and dips, high grade Greek olive oil of course, and the Mykonian Selection, which included smoked eggplant, black eyed peas, spicy white cheese and a pinkish slightly salty fish roe moussaka (it was heavenly and hit the right balance of saltiness and savory). To cleanse our palates after those starters, we shared the Apaggio salad, a delightful and fresh concoction of salad greens, figs, oranges, cherry tomatoes, cheese and cashew nuts topped with balsamic vinaigrette. This was my personal favorite dish of the night and I highly recommend it if you are looking for something fresh and delicious after a long day on Ornos beach.

In order to allow us to taste a full range of the menu, our waiters brought out a selection of dishes from the kitchen. We tried fried zucchini chips, saganaki cheese, eggplant with marinara sauce, bruschetta, and calamari, which was standard; however, the appetizer favorite of the table was fried feta drizzled with honey and sesame seeds.

The fried feta was a mixture of a lightly fried crust and warm, soft feta inside a rectangular shaped piece of cheese, large enough for a table of four to share adequately.

After that bounty, we still had a few dishes to test out to get an idea of the mains that Apaggio specializes in. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to try any of the fish dishes which are, on our to-do list for our next visit to Apaggio. We were able to sample a shrimp pasta in white sauce, which was creamy and seasoned well—if you are not an al dente fan make sure to alert your waiter beforehand. One of the most savory dishes we had were patties made of a mixture of pork, veal and chicken. This came garnished with large, fresh chunks of tomato, lightly fried potatoes and pita bread. This is certainly a dish for meat eaters and very filling.

Overall, we had a wonderful experience at Apaggio and cannot wait for our next opportunity to dine there.
