On June 9, 2012 I took a road trip to Newport, Rhode Island in the all-new Toyota Prius c. After two days of asking my readers for suggestions of places to go, I selected Newport. The “Rhode” trip began with 4 friends (Chloe, Randall, Clara and John) and I in Brooklyn, NY. We were prepared to tackle Newport in one day!

The trip started at 5:30 am. After getting ready, I hit the road at 7am to pick up the first round of friends. I met Chloe, Clara and John at Peter Pan Bakery in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Peter Pan has the best red velvet doughnuts ever!

Next stop was to pick up Randall in Long Island City, Queens. With everyone’s totes and bags in the trunk we still had an ample amount of room left. Now we were ready to hit the highway to Newport. By using Entune and the neat navigation system in the Prius C we were told that the trip would take 3 hours and 36 minutes. Throughout the duration of the trip we listened to music on the XM radio, which was great since the six speakers made us feel like we were in our very own private concert.

3 hours and 36 mins later we arrived with more than a half tank of gas left! First stop…food! We parked in the downtown area and walked to Juicy  Cheesy for lunch. After leaving lunch, we headed to Bannister Wharf to do a little sight-seeing.

Now that our belly’s were full and we saw the wharf, we headed to the Easton Beach area. This is where we had the opportunity to walk along the Cliff Walk. This was a winding trail that lead to one of our destination points, The Breakers Mansion. The Breakers was the old “cottage” home for the Vanderbilts. The home was a massive structure that looked like anything out of a fairy tale, or Downton Abbey. After leaving the breakers we headed to the beach for rest and relaxation and a quick snack, lobster rolls of course!

The trip wasn’t over yet! We then headed to Bowen’s Wharf for dinner. This time we went to a restaurant on the water with a great view of the sunset. After eating we were back on the road to Brooklyn, NY. The great thing is that we were able to drive from Brooklyn, NY to Newport, RI, around the town and back to Brooklyn all on one tank of gas!! I guess when they said 53/46/50 MPG (city/highway/combined) they were right!

The next morning with gas still available!

Quick quiz, do you know what the c stands for in Prius c? It stands for city, which makes complete sense since I was able to park in the tightest of NYC parking spots with complete ease. Just under $24,000 for the deluxe Prius c Four edition it’s a complete steal. All in all we had an awesome time that was extremely cost efficient due to gas mileage efficiency.
