SRO Pizzeria: Delicious Pizza and Cool Vibes on the LES

Summer is wrapping up, but we still have about a month of solid weather left to enjoy some of the newest restaurants and lounges to hit the New York scene in the last few months. In order to give you the content that you crave LuxuriousPrototype staff have been spending our days eating and drinking our way around the East Coast, NYC in particular.

In early June, I was introduced to SRO, New York’s newest speakeasy pizzeria located on the Bowery. You can enter this very cute and perfectly lit spot through Gia Trattorria, through a somewhat hidden entrance. I love secret entrances that make you feel like a real New Yorker once you’ve figured out exactly where it is and SRO has one of the best entrances out there.

Our kind hosts, headed by Giulio Adriani, kicked off the evening with explaining just what SRO stands for, which is Single Room Occupancy, something old school New Yorkers may not have heard in a while, but was once in abundance on Bowery. SRO’s were single rooms with in tenement style building, with shared restroom facilities, inspiration was found in the name and SRO Pizzeria was born.

After walking in you are struck by the awesome vibe the lighting creates. SRO is perfect for a date night.

We were served a selection of different pizzas, which started with the Montanara, an original NY style fried pizza. The Montanara, is partially fried and then finished in the oven. This creates a pizza dough that is halfway zeppole, halfway pizza.  It was heavenly and was my favorite of the evening. The marinara sauce was fresh and the cheese and basil were used in perfect proportion to the size of the pie. Go there and get this! Coming in at second place for my favorite pizza of the evening was the Avenue B which had brussels sprouts, pancetta, garlic and buffala mozzarella. This pizza was so savory and flavorful. I have ordered this on subsequent visits and have not been disappointed. Don’t forget to eat your crust too, it’s light and buttery and not to be wasted.

Pro Tip: Come here and get the fantastic tasting menu. All of the foodies who want a bit of everything should order this and start with the excellent zucchini appetizer. And best of all, the tasting menu is $38! It is absolutely worth the price! You get a starter, pizza, dessert and wine all of your own choosing, which is unlike other tasting menus where the choice is made for you.
